stitch markers

I have a confession... I have become such a multitasker that I cannot stand just sitting there watching TV or in the passenger seat on any driving trip of length. In those times, I normally knit or crochet. Smaller projects as I do not have the attention span for bigger ones? I recently scored on some Rowan Big Wool yarn for a great price (in a not so hot pink color, but hey... it was a great deal). I have always been a big fan of Wen Lan Chia's Twinkle patterns, but never had the huge yarn. I was so excited I could finally do something. But - that yarn is the huge super bulky weight (but nice and light still, which is why I love it). So, it was off to ebay to order a set of size 36 circulars, when I realized that I had no stitch marker even close to being big enough... And that I didnt' want to spend anymore at this point. And so... I made some up - I had all these supplies left over from my early years in scrapbooking when metal was all the rage... While I do sometimes make jewelry now, I usually use better materials, and so this older stuff has just been sitting around. Heh. Not anymore. It was perfect....

For my size 17 circulars

For my size 36

And here they are in action...

(I love these twinkle patterns b/c they're HUGE and so, it takes about the same number of physical stitches as, say, a baby sweater. I also like it b/c it looks so different than anything else out there). Hopefully I can finish this one soon. The one time I tried to make a non-kid sized sweater with a size 8 needle - i was still knitting 6 mos into it and I was bored out of my mind...

Cardsketch 61

Good morning everyone!! Its saturday and I'm ready to just get my crafty on. I had a very stressful week at work, and am ready to just bury myself in paper, ink and glue. :)

When Sugar Nellie came out with their first line of these adorable Manga stamps, I just had to get my hands on them. And each new release just gets cuter and cuter. I picked up all of the most recent January release. What I love about them (beyond their adorableness) is how you can customize hair into unnatural shades and it still looks pretty good. I didn't go that far with this one, but I could easily do pink hair and since its manga, its ok? :)

ANYHOO. Enjoy the sketch!!

Unity Thursday 2-18-10

Good morning everyone!! Happy Thursday!!

Today, I'm playing with the Feb10 KOTM again, Nothing But Blue Skies. I've always thought double bicycles were so romantic - something about having to work in tandem or it doesn't work at all - so beautifully symbolic of a good rule of thumb for a successful relationship... I made a card to remind me of that message all the time.

I colored my image with pencils and gamsol, then highlighted the bike part ("metal") with a clear gel pen to give it a shine like enameled paint.

Have a wonderful Thursday and enjoy the rest of your hop through the DT blogs...

(this paper is leftover from a valentines release 2009 - I want to say it was MLYB but I'm not sure since it is a scrap... The die cut strip is Making Memories.)

Tutorial - Chinese New Year Red Envelope

Chinese New Year is one of the biggest holidays of the Chinese calendar, and it is this coming Sunday! It coincides with Valentines Day this year.

It is Chinese tradition to give red envelopes with money to the children in the family, to bring prosperity in the coming year. Since they're paper based, I thought I'd make some this year. This is the template I used - please bear with me - I drew it by hand so its not pretty and graphic. My skills in photoshop are very limited. (I also scanned it in pdf - if you want me to email it to you please just leave me a comment or email me and I'll go ahead and send it to you). This is supposed to be a drawn image on a normal 8.5x11" sheet of paper.

Cut it out and use as a template. Trace it over red paper and cut out. I have seen it where people use all kinds of paper. My feeling is - it must be red. These are "red envelopes" - using another color is like saying let's have an easter puppy or easter bear. No no no... it must be the easter BUNNY... and in my house, red envelopes must be red paper....
Or if you don't mind the print lines, just print it directly onto the backside of your main base paper.

Cut it out and fold along the score lines.
Adhere your edges

It is the Year of the Tiger, and luckily, Tiger stamped images are not too hard to find. This one is from Inkadinadoo - Asian Characters. These are clear stamps.

I stamped directly on to orange paper, and then on the back side of the scraps of red. I am going to be piecing these and needed two colors. (**Note: the top left tiger was stamped in Memento. The image was slightly blotchy - so I restamped with versafine in the rest of the images).

Cut out and piece...
Then embellish your envelopes. The text stamps are from CTMH, and the die cuts are from Spellbinders.

Happy Chinese New Year to you!! May the Year of the Tiger bring you health, happiness and prosperity!

Tutorial - little messages gift pack

Hi everyone!! Happy Friday! I'm here with a cute Valentines day gift for your significant other, a little packet of love notes. (Reprinted from the Rubber Romance blog...)

First, cut a piece of plain white copy paper in half length wise, then into strips.

Write on each strip a reason what you love about your significant other.... I think handwriting is best here for the personal nature of it but you certainly could write it on a computer, print it out, then cut into strips after.... Fill up your strips, and roll each message up.

Print the Button Box template from Mirkwood Designs on the backside of a piece of double sided printed paper.

(here's the front side of the paper so you can see what it looks like...)

Cut out your template, score along the score lines. (**note: the print and score lines don't bother me because they are on the inside. If it is an issue for you, print the template onto a white piece of paper, and then use your print out as a template/guide over printed cardstock. You can trace with pencil or simply hold it on top of the paper as a cut guide.)

Tuck your rolled message into the base of your little box/envelope. DON'T adhere your edges. You want it to open up like a cute little packet of notes.

Use stickers to spell "I love..." and adhere to the top flap:

Color your Rubber Romance Image - this is "You Shouldn't Have".

Mat your stamped image, and use same stickers to spell a title. Tie the whole thing with a bow tied string.

On Valentine's Day, it's just a matter of a pull, and all these cute little notes roll out with reasons why you love your special someone...

Enjoy.
