Hip Hop December 9, 2010

Good morning everyone!!  Welcome to Hip Hop December 9!!

Today, I'm super excited.  Way back in the day when I used to be on the design team for a crafting flower manufacturer, Iron Orchid Designs debuted their beautifully sophisticated images and I just fell in love....  I've missed playing around with their designs, and so I was super excited when I learned IOD was cobranding with Unity!! YIPPEEE!!   And so today, I am playing with Provencial - Carte, and some layers of ink, embossing, resist, and more ink to create the background on a plain cream colored cardback.....

Hip Hop November 18, 2010

Welcome to Hip Hop!!!

We're doing Christmas ornaments or kids projects this week. I made a cute ornament using 3 scallop circles, embossing, and some stamps from the samantha walker series.

Simply punch out your circles; emboss them.  Then fold the first one in the middle; align with the next two so your scallops line up when you fold them.  Then adhere them back to back, with your string in the middle. Be sure to attach your image to the string before you adhere all the circles back to back.

The embossing folder is Cuttlebug.

Hip Hop November 11, 2010

Good morning everyone!!  Welcome to Hip Hop!!

Today's theme is Journal Your Christmas, ala Ali Edwards' December Daily project.  I absolutely love the thought.  But I am not a mini album girl.  I enjoy making them for gifts, but I don't have many in my house - I'm pretty much a single album girl with ALL different sized layouts inside (I use American Crafts DRing).

But like I said, I love the idea of capturing your December daily.... (I try to do the project 365 as well).  So, I hit on making a December layout that I will fill in with either pictures or memorabilia for the December countdown.  Each circle is 2", which is perfect for my 2" punch.  I will leave those filled in circles as is, for visual interest.  I used the November Kit of the Month, Picture Perfect

Thank you so much for stopping by, and thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

Hip Hop November 2, 2010

Good morning everyone!!  Welcome to Hip Hop!!

Today we're featuring Thanksgiving table decor - I have a modification on the theme and a request for your help, suggestions and opinions.

Later this month, I am in charge of a charity event for a large non crafty organization.  I have 100 noncrafty people coming in to fill food baskets for pre-screened families (mostly women and children) who are domestic violence survivors.   With the basket filling, we will be making cards, and each volunteer will write a personal message - the card will then be tied onto the top of the food basket and the volunteer will also decorate the basket top.

Table top decor in a sense that this might be the only Thanksgiving gift that these families will be getting.

I have to kit up 100 cards - here's my rub...

it has to be easy enough that non-crafty people can do it
it has to be easy enough not to instigate creative paralysis (these are noncrafty professionals...)
any message on it must be sensitive to their situation (hence the very generic sentiment I've used)
it has to be versatile enough that younger people can do it (people are bringing their families)
it has to be nice enough that I'm not embarrassed to kit it
and it has to be easy enough that I can cut 100 of them fairly easily.

This is all coming out of my stash - so things are a little OLD, and not all 100 kits will be exactly alike.   But I came up with 3 designs and am asking you to let me know which one you like best?

Also, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE your suggestions on how people who want to kick it up a notch can glam them up.  I will have a small table with more advanced items there for people to take it a step up if they want to.

So, I'm using my cricut b/c that seems easiest for cutting the main element.  The straight lines I can easily cut on my trimmer.  I could substitute a pumpkin there instead of the acorn.  I had a gorgeous leaf design before, but it was so intricate, I thought it would freak out the volunteers.... so I went with easy cut lines.

I will prestamp it all to make it easier (and since I only have one set)

Card 1 - ok.  what do you think of the bottlecap?  Yuck?  should I just do a cardstock circle mat?

This uses the Samantha Walker Fall Family Memories set and the grainy background set
Card 2 - again using the Samantha Walker set, and the Worn Grid background

Card 3 - using the inside image and the November KOTM and the woodgrain background stamp

Thank you so much for stopping by, and thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

Halloween cards

My daughter will often take full pieces of cardstock and cut just a bit out of them, then leave the rest of it just laying around.  Because a nonfull sheet should not be refiled under my crazy organization system, I will just cut it down for card backs.  Here, she had this orange paper and I thought it was perfect to just sit down and make some quick cards.

Stamps are Gorjuss by Sugar Nellie (girls) and Making Memories (Halloween)

Both are available in my etsy store.

WCMD Paint Challenge - Unity USCWCMD13

Its World Card Making Day, and Unity's pumping it up with a whole HOST of challenges today!!

I'm playing with PAINT!!  My challenge to you is to use PAINT on your cards.

I love paint.  It is the ultimate unifier.  One of my favorite techniques is whitewashing - sometimes I have papers that I want to use together, but the print is too strong to hold an image - or it is otherwise too distracting for what I want to do.  That's when I pull out my paint.  I have a bottle of white paint with a paint dauber cap on it on my desk at all times.

It is very easy to do.  Just apply paint directly over your paper in layers.  A single layer will tone down your print.  Here, I wanted to texturize it a bit - and so I applied multiple layers to make it a bit thicker, then I put a stamp into it while it was still wet, to define those textures (see the faint lines in the paint?).  When it was fully dried, I simply stamped my image over it - I'm using memento ink.

Out of the nestability, it looked like this:

That was a bit too opaque for the look I wanted.  Now, I'm barely seeing the lines or colors of the print.  And so, I took some sandpaper, and then sanded it down in areas, to reveal the stripes.  Inked the edges, and then finished the card.  (images are from the September Kit of the Month

Now its your turn!  Let me see what you do with paint on a card.  Be sure to mosey on back to the Unity forum and the splitcoast gallery to share your results.  Have a great time!  and I can't wait to see...  Be sure to use USCWCMD13 as your code.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hip Hop September 9, 2010

Welcome to Hip Hop!!! I've been so inspired recently by the daily Brave Girl truths, by my friend J who has lost 100 lbs and is so positive, by my sister who ran a half marathon.... And so, when I saw these stamps in the September kit of the month, when i am with you, I had to try and put together a card in hopes of passing along my optimism.

I'm going to just slip this into the mail for a special someone, and hope to bring a smile to her face... :)
